Three steps to knowing your future

Here are three steps to knowing your future (sort of), for the next time you are visiting a Shinto shrine.

Step 1: shake the box.

Step 2: pull one stick from the box, and look at the number written on it.

Step 3: go to the designated box, pay the required donation, and announce your number.

Once you have done all this, you will receive your written fortune, known in Japanese as Omikuji (おみくじ or 御神籤).

Apparently, 2011 should a fine year for me, as I got the best possible fortune, 大吉.

If you are not happy with the fortune you received, there are designated places on the shrine grounds (trees or metal structures), where you can tie the piece of paper, and thus make sure that the bad luck does not follow you home.

(in case you are wondering, the first four pictures date from our New Year's day visit to the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine, while the last one was taken in a temple in down-town Kyoto back in April 2007).
